Que montre la télévision des professions et des professionnel(le)s ? Genre des métiers représentés et choix d’orientation des jeunes

Abstract : In the field of career counselling psychology, some surveys have stressed the role that some characters or people seen on television may play in adolescents’career prospects. In other respects, media specialists have studied how television could inflect some behaviours or representations, or even some televiewers’ way of life. After a research literature, this paper focuses on the professionals shown on television, by analysing systematically the whole programs broadcasted in prime time on the French hertzian channels during a week. While the sample of these professionals doesn’t fit the sociological realities of nowadays work, professional activities are depicted mostly realistically, in fictions as well as in documentaries. Nevertheless, they occult some important tasks and take up unreservedly the gender stereotypes about professions. Broadcasts for young children seem particularly caricatured, as they greatly emphasize those social gender roles.
