Quelles peuvent-être les finalités individuelles et collectives de l'éducation en orientation ?

Abstract : Although a textbook (authored by Antoine Léon) defining the principles of career education was published as early as 1957 in Paris, it nevertheless did develop in Europe only a quarter of a century later, particularly under the influence of Canadian academics, amplifying a movement initiated in the United States. This blossoming (observed in all Western countries) is explained by a number of factors, especially an ideology lauding individual achievement in an open society, mass schooling and the construction of school organizations having complex architectures, the transformation of work organization, the globalization of employment, etc.. The ultimate purposes of career education interventions are defined only quite rarely: Are they aimed at making workers more flexible? …At helping in construction of the self? …At facilitating a regulation of school populations in the various curricula? …At promoting a societal integration? Etc. Although the theoretical foundations of these educative programs are often fragile and many of them have never been rigorously evaluated, those which have prove to have attained some of their educational objectives (e.g. participants developed clearer and more differentiated views on trades, more differentiated and complex self-concepts, etc.). However, two studies showed that such interventions conducted in the classroom by teachers, resulted in a lower level of aspiration of students stemming from modest backgrounds. Several factors should determine the future of career education: evolution of the social function of school, of the role attributed to working in personal development, of "identity issues", of the importance of educational industries, etc.
