When inducing labor compromises a woman's motherhood

Abstract
Under the guise of medical science, an ongoing study, French Arrive, based on a trial first done in the United States, seeks to induce labor at 39 weeks pregnancy in all healthy women pregnant with their first child. This mechanization of women’s bodies stems from patriarchal ideology. As the authors of this essay demonstrate, it dehumanizes childbirth and seeks to normalize the process of bringing life into the world, as well as caregivers’ work. Through an interactionist approach used in work-psycho-sociology; Claudine Schalck and Raymonde Gagnon emphasize the value of the coconstruction of care in the service of women and their inner resources, which respects and supports the construction of their motherhood.
