Une question de Thierry Boy : s’orienter, est-ce faire des choix rationnels ou rationaliser des décisions contraintes ?

Abstract : Thierry Boy was preparing a doctoral dissertation entitled “Transformations of vocational representations in students during their transitions from junior to senior high school”. His hypothesis was that “contrary to what supposes the model of an actor making rational decision, an uneasy behavior — as coming to accept engaging in a previously unwanted course of study — triggers a progressive revaluation of the actors’ views of the occupations targeted by this course”. To test this hypothesis, Thierry Boy carried out a longitudinal study in a population of students from three junior high schools, in a small town in Seine-et-Marne, during their last school year, and the following one in the different programs of the various senior high schools where they entered. They repeatedly responded to questionnaires about their interests (according to the typology of Holland) and to their social representations of occupations, in terms of gender and social prestige. The operational hypothesis was that students’ responses would be relatively stable among those who would be accepted in the courses they expected, but that they would evolve in the other students, by becoming more consistent with their new situations, so as to allow them maintaining a good self-esteem. These observations were processed by Thierry Boy. They tended to verify his operational hypothesis. Unfortunately, his health did not allow him to finish his dissertation.
